About StopGETrees-announce
English (USA)

The Campaign's orgin in North America to oppose this technology was initiated by the Native Forest Network's Eastern North America Resource Center and the Global Justice Ecology Project in 2000. The network has grown into a powerful independent network of regional grassroots groups, with links to allied NGOs around the world. Member organizations of the Campaign to Stop Genetically Engineered Trees now include some of the most effective forest protection organizations in the nation, as well as some of the leading organizations in the international opposition to biotechnology, including: Forest Ethics, American Lands Alliance, Polaris Institute, Rainforest Action Network, the Dogwood Alliance, Southern Appalachian Biodiversity Project, Family Farm Defenders, Forest Stewards Guild, and WildLaw. Internationally, the Alliance has established links with allied organizations in Mexico, Chile, Uruguay, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, England, Finland, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and South Africa.

In the last three years, the Campaign has achieved significant accomplishments. As a result of public pressure, Kinko's became the first company to pledge to refuse to purchase paper products made from GE trees. The Campaign is putting pressure on other major markets (like Office Depot and Staples) to make similar commitments. Building on the experience and momentum of regional forest and biotechnology campaigns already proving effective, the Campaign has built alliances with existing national campaigns including the Staples Campaign, Boise Cascade Campaign, CitiBank Campaign, National Forest Protection Alliance, and the southeastern Georgia Pacific Campaign. All of these national campaigns now include demands related to prohibiting the genetic engineering of trees.

This list will provide up-to-date news and announcements concerning the GE Trees debate.
